Hello, I am Matt Schulz.

I advise companies, entrepreneurs, and professionals on business immigration and related company formation, contracts, and business law. 

My experience includes L-1/EB1C, O-1/EB1A/EB1B/EB2NIW, E-2/EB5, H1B/H1B1/E-3/TN, EB2/EB3, R-1/EB4, B-1, F-1/J-1, LLC/INC/PC formation/acquisition, and much, much more.

With a track record of delivering over 10,000 business visas over 40+ years as a business immigration lawyer, most of which in the world's largest law firms (Graham & James - now Squire Patton Boggs, Baker McKenzie, Dentons) in Silicon Valley, I am not just an immigration attorney. I am an innovator, strategist, and trusted legal advisor.

Meet Matt Schulz

In law school, I studied immigration law and completed a clinical program with Professor Bill Ong Hing, and worked part-time with a number of well-known San Francisco immigration attorneys, as well as Baker McKenzie, then the world's largest law firm.

Licensed to practice law by the California State Bar in 1984, I joined the Silicon Valley office of a famous immigration boutique law firm when the USCIS recognized the importance of the region and opened its first office in San Jose. I taught at Santa Clara University at night, started my own firm after a few years, and was quickly recruited by a multinational law firm headquartered in San Francisco.

Over the years, I have had my own firm and been a partner at two of the world's largest law firms. I have represented some of the largest multinational corporations in the world, as well as state-owned enterprises and universities. I have also represented many private business owners and Silicon Valley startups. I have authored many legal articles, publications, and web sites.

Always an innovator, I bought my first personal computer in 1983 while in law school. Mine was the first personal computer when I joined my first law firm in 1985 and my second law firm in 1988. 

I designed and published one of the first law firm websites on the Internet (SchulzLaw.com 1994-2009, discontinued while I was a partner at Baker McKenzie), according to a 1994 article titled "Lawyers in Cyberspace" published by The Baltimore Sun. In 2001, I created fetchmyvisa, an app to enable real-time information sharing and data collection with clients.

I became proficient at Linux, Apache, MySQL, PhP, Html, xHtml, JavaScript and dynamic PDF. I am publishing on SchulzLaw.us since 2024. I apply various technologies to the law firm's daily law practice, including creating SchulzLaw.us in Drupal, and hosting the firm's own LLM server with my custom MLX Python3 scripting and a lot of other tech stuff I am far too ready to talk about with curious/interested clients.

The problem with conventional approaches

Too many businesses and lawyers use U.S. immigration law in a very limited way. They react to government requests and decisions as if compliance is the only recourse. They fail to realize that government adjudicators are often working off a small portion of U.S. law, using boilerplate response forms to request evidence or deny petitions without giving full information of what the law in fact allows.

My career always has centered on immigration law. In the beginning, I did it all, but over time the worked concentrated on business immigration solutions. I saw first hand the problems navigating the complex U.S. legal system that multinational corporations, entrepreneuers, professionals, and investors faced. 

The importance of combining my knowledge of business immigration solutions with other issues my clients had to face from related fields of law - especially corporate, employment, tax, and trade - became aparent. 

Example, successfully coming to the U.S. to work, invest, and live without being aware of the U.S. federal and state tax liabilities on world-wide income is like winning a battle but losing the war. I saw successful business leaders from other countries be surprised by expensive legal proceedings when they applied in the U.S. what they learned worked well back home without consulting an attorney about whether that foreign business practice was well-advised, or even legal, in the U.S.

Be creative - think outside the box

Law is like a game with complex rules. You can sometimes win simply by applying the general rule. But more often, it is the exceptions created in the law, regulations, and agency policy that give us a full sense of what is possible to achieve.

Navigating a complex maze to successLaw is dynamic, not static. This is more aparent in 2025 and 2026 in the field of U.S. immigration law than at any other time in my 40+ years in the field. The tried and true practices that were successful in the past have had to be updated, and likely will continue to need to be updated, to be a winner. That is why I am constantly monitoring and updating our legal practices to stay ahead of the curve.

My years with large, full service law firms give me the breadth of knowledge needed to identify not just the immigration needs and solutions, but also how to identify and factor in the broad range of other legal issues that my clients face. 

SchulzLaw, PC advises business owners, executives, and professionals how best to design and implement innovative and creative business immigration legal solutions (the Business Immigration Practice) with a focus on transnational business (the Business Practice and the Trade Practice). 

At the core of my practice is global mobility – the movement of entrepreneurs, business owners, professionals, and workers – to the United States, with work in related areas such as corporate, contract, trade, and employment. I continue to regularly lectures before university, professional organizations, and government entities around the world on legal matters.

Achievements

  • Provided pre- and post-acquisition immigration counseling for the acquisition of a publicly traded US technology company by a British multinational.
  • Handled new company formation, and staffing solutions for many new start-ups, including the expansion of companies in other countries to the US market.
  • Assisted a Vietnamese agribusiness expand to the US market, including business formation, immigration, contracts, trade and IP.
  • Assisted on the import of PPE (masks and gloves) manufactured abroad to the US during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Advised on the formation and staffing of a private office operation for high-net-worth members investing in the US.
  • Advised a European national railroad on immigration strategies to meet staffing needs for expansion into the US market.
  • Worked with a European technology company on best practices to support its global expansion, including immigration, employment and corporate legal issues in the US, Europe and Asia.
  • Assisted a multinational Latin American beverage company on its expansion into the US market.
  • Represented a US business developer on the establishment and operation of a US government-designated EB5 regional center for immigrant investors

Baker McKenzie (October 1996 - June 2013)

Attorney / Of Counsel and later Partner. Managed the Global Immigration and Mobility Practice for the California offices of Baker McKenzie. Focused on business immigration for multinational companies, entrepreneurs, investors, and foreign professionals. Member of Global Employment Practice.  Creator, author and editor of the firm’s Global Mobility Handbook and US Immigration Handbook.

Attorney / Owner. Managed business immigration law firm.  Authored, created, and maintained one of the first law firm web sites, schulzlaw.com.
